Oldbridge has a very daring history of its own to tell but it Is now home to the Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre. Located in the recently restored 18th century Oldbridge House in Meath, the site of the famous historic Battle of the Boyne which took in the 17th century.
If you get a chance to visit the center you will discover the story of this infamous battle between the two kings that occurred on 1 July 1690 (or 11 July, according to our modern calendar). At this battle site on the banks of the River Boyne, two rival monarchs, King James II and his son-in-law William III, clashed violently with fearful consequences.
Both kings commanded their armies in person. William had 36,000 troops and James had 25,000, the largest number of soldiers ever deployed on an Irish battlefield. At stake were the British throne, French dominance in Europe and religious power in Ireland. With all these prizes combined the Battle of the Boyne became the most important chapter in Irish history.
